The Maharishi Ayurveda Approach to Beauty and Skin Care

“Every person is born perfect. Inferiority is a mistake of the mind, a cloud covering the light. Dissolve the clouds by observing a balanced life with healthy habits. Nourish your mind and body. Connect with your own inner self. Celebrate your own magnificence and your beauty will always shine through.” -Dr. Rama Kant Mishra, renowned Ayurvedic physician and dermatologist

The Three Pillars of Beauty

Maharishi Ayurveda (MAV), the modern, consciousness-based revival of the ancient Ayurvedic medicine tradition, considers true beauty to be supported by three pillars; Outer Beauty, Inner Beauty and Lasting Beauty. Only by enhancing all three can we attain the balanced state of radiant health that makes each of us the most fulfilled and beautiful person we can be.

Outer Beauty: Roopam

The outer signs of beauty – your skin, hair and nails – are more than just superficial measures of beauty. They are direct reflections of your overall health. These outer tissues are created by the inner physiological processes involved in digestion, metabolism and proper tissue development. Outer beauty depends more on the strength of your digestion and metabolism, the quality of your diet, and the purity of your blood, than on external cleansers and conditioners you may apply.

General Recommendations for Outer Beauty

As we will discuss, the key to skin care is matching your diet and skin care routine to the specific skin type you have. Meanwhile, there are some valuable recommendations for lustrous skin, hair and nails that will be helpful to everyone, regardless of skin type.

1. Diet: Without adequate nourishment, your collagen layer thins and a kind of wasting takes place. Over time, your skin can shrivel up like a plant without water from lack of nourishment. To keep your skin plump and glowing:

A. Eat fresh, whole organic foods that are freshly prepared.

Avoid packaged, canned, frozen, processed foods and leftovers. These foods have little nutritional value and also they are often poorly digested which creates impurities that localize in the skin. The resulting buildup of toxins causes irritation and blocks circulation depriving the skin of further nourishment and natural cleansing processes.

B. Favor skin nourishing foods.

Leafy green vegetables contain vitamins, minerals (especially iron and calcium) and are high in antioxidant properties. They nourish the skin and protect it from premature aging.

Sweet juicy fruits like grapes, melons, pears, plums and stewed apples at breakfast are excellent for the skin in almost everyone.

Eat a wide variety of grains over different meals and try mixed grain servings at breakfast and lunch. Add amaranth, quinoa, cous cous, millet and barley to the wheat and rice you already eat.

Favor light, easy to digest proteins like legume soups (especially yellow split mung dhal), whole milk, paneer (cheese made from boiling milk, adding lemon and straining solids) and lassi (diluted yogurt and spice drinks).

Oils like ghee (clarified butter) and organic, extra virgin olive oil should be included in the diet as they lubricate, nourish and create lustre in the skin.
Use spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and black pepper to improve digestion, nourish the skin and cleanse it of impurities.

Avoid microwaving and boiling your vegetables. They lose as much as 85% of their antioxidant content when cooked in this way. Steaming and sautéing are best.

Benefits You Get From Drawing And Painting Therapies

Very few people know that art can be one effective tool in mental health treatment. Art is a combined name of different hobbies like drawing, painting and sketching. Psychologists often face questions like what art can possibly do with psychotherapy. The answer is, art is one of the expressive mediums like dance and music. Drawing therapy and painting therapy help people to communicate and overcomes stress easily. It also explores several aspects in human personalities.

Art therapy:
Art therapy is nothing but the use of artistic methods to treat psychological disorders. Psychologists around the world use art as their tool and it works like wonders. It enhances mental health and overcomes your stress. Painting therapy helps people to relieve stress and makes people calmer and happy. Happiness in life is important and we should experiment with different techniques to stay happy always.

Benefits of Drawing Therapy:

1. Distraction:
Drawing therapy can take your mind off and help you to forget all your stress. When you concentrate on drawing you forget everything and your main goal is to draw the best picture. This motivation distracts you from stressing and finally, when you finished your sketches, you head gets clear and stress free. You become ready to give a fresh start.

Flow:
While drawing you adopt a certain quality that is called “flow”. Psychological experts say that flow helps us to forget all the stress. We also start concentrating what we love doing most. The word flow means complete engagement into something. It also considered being in a near meditative state. The flow in art therapy carries many of the benefits of meditation. Once you are done you feel relaxed and calm. Flow can be experienced when you’re doing creative activities like writing, and even gardening. You can also get the same in painting therapy.

Self Care:
Having a hobby can make you feel more balanced in your lifestyle. Sometimes with all personal and professional responsibilities, we forget to enjoy our own time. It is also known as me time. Thus, we deserve enjoying ‘down time’ and self care. When we do something that we like we feel fresh and relaxed. Hobbies help us to release stress and we enjoy self care.

You can Practice Art Therapy for Stress Relief:
People who love sketching can use drawing and painting for stress relief. It is easy to maintain a sketch diary regularly. Take out some times regularly and draw whatever you feel like. A sketching therapy helps you to be cathartic and creative. Finally it is stress relieving.

How to Relieve Your Stress?
Here in this section you know about relieving stress. First, you should sketch pictures that describe your feeling and it can be related to your ongoing stress. This sketching therapy can be a way of processing your related emotions, reducing some of the stress they carry. To reduce stress some of the psychologists suggest that you can sketch abstract pictures that express feelings related to past stressful experiences, as a way of processing your emotions and healing. Once you finish your sketch you feel lighter and stress free for sure.

The Five Keys To Success In Building A Sound Therapy Business

5 keys to success with sound therapy

When we set up and run a sound therapy practice, or a broader holistic therapy practice, there are 5 keys to success:

Develop a strong identity
Develop a positive, supportive mindset
Set clear intentions
Put in place a layered system for training and practice, price and service structures, marketing, selling and administration.
Take action immediately

So let’s look at each of these in turn… In this article I cover the first two… I cover the last 3 in another article.

Develop a strong identity

Your identity is a matrix that influences what you do and how you behave. A clear, strong, positive identity acts like a navigation system on a boat in stormy weather, helping you to reach your chosen destination when the waves are high and the wind is wild. It keeps you moving forward; being resilient when faced by challenges and gives you the strength and courage to overcome obstacles on your path.

Your identity is bigger and wider than the roles you play in your work, your job, your career, and in your personal life, as a friend, sister, brother, child, parent, partner, lover and so on. It gives texture and form to your prime purpose or mission in life and what you hold to be the keys to fulfilling your mission.

There are three features of our identity matrix:

How we see ourselves as people
Our prime purpose or mission in life
The keys aspects of what we do to fulfil our purpose

The clearer you are about your identity and mission and the more focussed you are on realising it, the more positive impact you will make, and the more successful you will be as a Sound Therapist, if that is what you choose to do. Are you clear about who you are, why you are here and what you are doing to fulfil your life purpose?

Develop a positive, supportive mindset

Our mindset is the way we perceive the world and the ways in which we fit into the world. It is made up of our attitudes and beliefs – thought forms that shape our behaviour. Often they remain hidden from view, buried in our sub-conscious mind, and yet, like our hearts, they continually beat out their own rhythms, whether we are aware of them or not. Our mindset can support or undermine our efforts to succeed.

To be most effective as sound therapists, we need a mindset that is positive and which supports our intentions and identify matrix. This brings us into greater alignment and enables our energy to flow more easily and smoothly, giving us the openness and flexibility we need to keep fresh in the moment, and enabling us to respond appropriately to whatever challenge is present to us.

I know many people who work as complimentary health practitioners, doing a fantastic job helping others to deal with challenging issues in their lives, and yet they struggle to make a living from it. I know others who do an equally great job and they generate a healthy income from their practice. I’ve noticed that the practitioners who struggle financially usually find it difficult to think of their practice as a business and don’t do all the things that are needed to generate a financially sustainable income. For example they shy away from marketing and selling, or they don’t value their services highly and charge low fees. The key difference between those that struggle financially and those that don’t is their MINDSET.

Listed below are the 7 key mindsets for building a successful business as a sound therapist. This is a set of attitudes and beliefs that you can adopt for your own success:

Complementary health care can be just as valuable to people as conventional allopathic medicine. In fact, given the choice, many people prefer to use complementary health care practices instead of surgery and drugs.
By blending the best of ancient wisdom and modern science, sound therapy is a highly effective system for creating balance and well-being.
Sound therapy is especially valuable at this point in time, when the existing financial, economic, social and health care systems are crumbling and many people are experiencing pain, suffering and dis-ease as a result, and are looking for fresh solutions to their problems.
Many people are willing and able to pay for the benefits that professional complementary health care gives them. Most people listen to music and know that sounds affect their moods and emotions. Many people are very receptive to the suggestion that sound therapy can be of great benefit to their health and well-being.
I will be able to help a lot of people by developing and running a successful business as a sound therapist.
I will feel hugely fulfilled when my business as a sound therapist is running successfully and I’m helping many clients every week to deal effectively with the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual issues that are causing them pain, distress and dis-ease.
I have the resources to face and overcome any frustrations and discomfort that I may experience while developing my business. It’s OK not to get it right first time. I can learn from each situation and setbacks can help me develop the qualities, skills and experience that I need to be successful.

The Health Care Debate – What the Media Doesn’t Tell You

The health care debate is a hot political topic right now in the United States. Some say we must have free health care available to all because medical care is too expensive for most people. A serious illness can cause bankruptcy. Others say that we can’t afford health care as a nation, and the current health care bill mandates that we all buy insurance, whether we want to or not, thus taking away our freedom of choice.

Both sides have some good points. We need change. But there are other issues that impact our health care quality and expenses that are rarely discussed by the media and in debates.

For example, The standard medical treatments offered in the US is allopathic medicine, which gives you three options: diagnostic tests, drugs and surgery. Those are your only options. Sometimes these are life saving, especially in traumatic injuries. Allopathic medicine shines in heroic, life saving procedures.

But today, most of our illnesses are chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. These conditions don’t go away with pills or surgery. The best our doctors can do is manage the disease with drugs. We don’t really heal, we just manage symptoms so we can get by. Often our quality of life is diminished, and we can have drug side effects, which leads to more drugs to deal with the side effects!

The current health care bill mandates allopathic treatments. But what about alternative medicine? There are many ways to treat the body besides drugs and surgery: herbal healing, chiropractic, energy medicine, homeopathics, vitamin therapy, acupuncture, naturopathy, massage therapy, hypnosis, dietary therapy, mind- body healing, flower essences, and more.

Many people are willing to pay for these natural treatments, out of their own pockets, with no insurance reimbursement. I know, I am one of them! I have always been attracted to natural remedies. I love plants and nature and I feel their healing potential for balance, harmony and wholeness. I’m a whole foods chef. Homepathics, energy medicine and herbs work for me.

With the health care mandates, will I be forced to pay for allopathic screenings, even though I don’t need radiation diagnostics, drugs or surgery? I am convinced that for my body, these remedies can be dangerous. I have a big question mark here, as natural medicine is not addressed at all in the health care bill. It is assumed that we all want allopathic care. Not so!

Another issue rarely addressed is how the quality of our food supply is contributing to the majority of our illnesses.

According to health researcher and best selling author Michael Pollen, 75% of our health care expenses are spent on chronic illnesses, and that’s our true health care crisis. Chronic illnesses caused by poor diet is what is bankrupting the country.

If we want to have true health, we must clean up our food supply. Poor quality foods contributes to diabetes, cancer and heat disease. Today the average grocery store is full of processed foods, genetically modified ingredients in processed foods, MSG, aspartame and other excitotoxins, and hormone filled meat and dairy. And so-called diet foods often are the worst offenders!

Processed foods make us sick and fat, so then we go to the the doctor to get drugs for all our symptoms caused by our poor food choices.

The current US food policy subsidizes corn and soy, which are in almost all fast foods and processed foods as soy lecithin, corn oil, high fructose corn syrup, soy oil, isolated soy protein, and other ingredients from soy and corn. Making processed foods with corn and soy is cheap. So we have the case where a McDonalds burger is cheaper than fresh vegetables. No wonder we are fat!

Cancer Care: Integrating the Best of Western and Eastern Healing Wisdom

Cancer invariably affects many of us — young, old, rich and poor. By the way things are cancer is here to stay. It is written that by 2020, new cases of cancer will double to 20 million a year. A review of literature shows that we are not winning this “war” against cancer. Cure for cancer still remains uncertain and elusive for most people.

Malaysians are a people of different ethnic background with various healing traditions derived from the Malay, Chinese, Indian and various indigenous races. The practice of “alternative” medicine is allowed, and is popular among Malaysians. In 1995, my wife and I started a semi-charitable organization called CA Care with the aim of helping cancer patients who have failed to find cure for their cancer through modern medicine. We understand that cancer in a complex problem and we need multi-approaches to achieve healing. The world needs more than the perspectives of medical science to help understand and solve this problem or at the very least contribute to lessen the pains and sufferings. Our strategy is to combine the best of what medical science has to offer besides relying on our Eastern healing wisdom. To us, healing of cancer should come from within. Patients need to participate in their own healing process and do what is best for themselves. After dealing with patients for over a decade we found our ways to be effective.

Our Cancer Care Therapy consists of the following holistic steps:

Step 1: Give total commitment to your healing. This is your sickness and only you can heal yourself — others can only help. If you come to us but do not believe that we can help you, then go and find someone else whom you have faith in or can trust so that he can help you better. Searching for healing in cancer needs your whole-hearted commitment. You need to change your ways — your lifestyle and mental attitude. It is more than swallowing some pills or getting an injection. Our decade of experience shows that those who participated fully in the healing process benefited tremendously.

Step 2: Seek proper medical help. We do not substitute medical doctors. We advise you to consult your doctors and get the best possible treatments, but at the same time know the limitations of what medical science can do. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are invasive and destructive. Most patients who came to us have generally undergone all these treatments and they failed to find a cure. So it is good that patients learn to know, “when enough is enough”.

Step 3: Take herbs. Herbs are not magic potions. But, herbs can restore the imbalances that exist in the sick body. People of China and India have been taking herbs for thousands of years to cure and maintain their health. Herbs do not kill cancer cells like the cytotoxic chemotherapy drugs or radiation. Many “educated”, presumably “scientific people” are skeptical about taking herbs. Our experiences show that herbs do no harm but on the contrary, help many cancer patients. There is a saying: the believer asks no question, while no answer can satisfy the unbeliever! If you do not believe in herbs, our advice is, find other avenues for your healing.

Step 4: Eat rightly. But, we also know that diet by itself cannot heal cancer, just as drugs or herbs alone cannot cure it. However, diet is important and can determine the progress and direction of your healing. From our experience, having to give up one’s favorite food is often refuted and even detested by some patients. They counter with: My doctors say I can eat anything I like — food has nothing to do with my cancer. We suggest that you read more widely. Every year, more and more evidence accumulates and points to the fact that what we eat determines the progress and direction of our healing or have a great influence on whether we get sick or not. Today, we are aware that the causes of 70% of cancers are related to our food and lifestyle. Studies have shown that as the Western way of life gains popularity in the developing countries, more and more people in the third world are getting cancers.

From the literature, we know that cancer patients benefit from a diet that consists of the following:

o Fresh vegetables, either raw or cooked.

o Lots of fresh juices and fruits.

o Whole grains, cereals, seeds and nuts in an as unprocessed form as possible.

o Avoid taking meat, dairy products, table salt, white sugar and cooking oils in the diet.

o Avoid types of food that are preserved, canned or processed.

Step 5: Lead a happy, stress-free life. We advocate that you do proper exercise daily but do not over-strain yourself. Qi-kung, tai-qi and deep abdominal breathing exercises are good for you. Also, cultivate a positive attitude. Avoid anxiety, anger and other forms of negative emotions. Learn to love and to forgive and forget. Let go of any emotional baggage that you have been carrying in your life! We also find that those who believe in God or a higher being/order, cope better with their sickness. We advise cancer patients to find solace in the Loving God, according to their own beliefs. On top of all these, patients who have full-hearted family support and tender loving care, generally fare better. Love, care and understanding of the spouse, children and relatives are important recipes for healing.

Organic Skin Care – 7 Simple Steps to Amazing Results!

Organic skin care is all about looking after your skin in the most natural way without the need for using artificial beauty enhancement methods. Organic skin care is best achieved by simply avoiding synthetic chemicals and allowing your skin to naturally take care of itself. The secret to maintaining beautiful skin is to incorporate health enhancing measures into everyday life. Even small changes in your lifestyle habits will result in dramatic changes to your skin complexion in the medium to long term.

To give your organic skin care regime a boost, you may wish to consider adopting the following seven steps:

1) Ensure you use the most natural skin care products. Check ingredients carefully when buying skin creams, face masks and moisturizers. Some examples of natural skin care ingredients include jojoba, safflower oil, rose hip seed oil, shea butter, beeswax, witch hazel, aloe vera, tea tree oil and chamomile. Many of these natural ingredient combinations can be tailored specifically to the individual’s skin type or skin condition. Organic based products have the advantage of being more effective and a lot cheaper than some well known premium brands.

2) Regular cardiovascular exercise will allow your skin pores to open up and release body toxins during the perspiration process. By increasing your heart beat and blood flow, your body will produce chemicals that will be beneficial to your skin.

3) Hydration is very important and is one of the key factors in determining the state of your skin. Our bodies are made up of around 60% water; therefore water intake has a highly beneficial impact on your entire body as well as your skin. It is recommended that your daily water consumption should be around eight glasses to flush out the toxins in your body.

4) Healthy eating is next on the list. The expression “you are what you eat” is very true. Therefore being careful about your food intake is important for effective organic skin care. You should aim to eat food that is natural as possible to ensure your body and skin gets the right balance of nutrients. A healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables containing antioxidants will give your skin a fresh look. Avoid any type of processed or deep fried oily foods.

5) Sleeping and having adequate rest allows your body to recharge and is instrumental as an organic skin care rejuvenating measure. A good night’s sleep helps skin firmness and reduces the appearance of dark circles around the eyes.

6) Avoiding the effects of stress is essential as an organic skin care therapy. All forms of negative emotions are toxic to your body and will almost certainly damage your health and well being. Take time out to relax and unwind from any stress related challenges you may face in life. Relaxation activities such as yoga are very effective at releasing tension and overcoming stress.

7) Protecting yourself from the effects of the sun is an important organic skin care strategy. Excessive exposure to the sun will have detrimental effects on your skin and will cause photo aging. It is imperative to protect yourself with either sunscreen lotions or by wearing appropriate clothing to limit your skin exposure.

With more and more people turning towards natural and herbal remedies for skin, the demand for organic skin products is rising. It’s time to explore these natural riches to ensure a supple, smooth and ever-glowing skin.

Anti-Aging Skin Care

Youth is the best period of human life. Our body, health, mind, energy, confidence level and above all our look remain at their best in this period. We hardly think of the time when we shall start getting older and lose our supple lustrous skin, wrinkles appear and hairs start graying gradually. These accumulated changes are called ‘aging’ process. Aging wins all over our body at the cellular level, and slowly leads to old age/ senescence and finally death. This is the utmost fate of every living being. The processes and efforts to reversal or slow down the pace of aging is called ‘anti-aging’. Anti-aging processes involve healthy life style, food and supplements, hormone therapy, skin care products and treatments, and therapeutic surgery.

Our skin is the part of the body where aging process appears first time. Sun damage, pigmentation, dryness and dullness, enlarging the pores on skin and finally fine wrinkles paw on the face. These are various symptoms of aging. These symptoms start appearing at mid or late thirty years of age normally. However, a stressed lifestyle, limitless alcohol consumption, excessive sun exposure, certain diseases and side effects of medicine can cause early aging. Nobody wants to grow old and hence is the craze for anti-aging skin care therapies and products. Anti-aging skin care is directed towards one’s skin only; it has nothing to do with our life span.

Before taking a look through the anti-aging skin care procedures available in the market we must know the basics of aging process. With the advent of time all the tissues of our skin start losing firmness and elasticity, hormone secretion changes in the body, damaged cell and tissue start accumulating. Alone skin care is not sufficient for slowing down aging. One must incorporate diet, exercise, and lifestyle with skin care to fight aging. According to dermatologists, anti-oxidant rich food (containing Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Lipoic acid etc.) like fresh whole and organic fruits and vegetables, nuts, milk, sprouts, sea weeds, olive oil etc. combat aging process.

The common skin care method has four steps, regular cleansing, toning, moisturizing and at certain interval, exfoliation. However, anti-aging skin cares include special methods and products in addition to them some of which one has to take at the clinic. Anti-aging treatments may be classified broadly into the following categories.

1. Topically applied products- At the primary stage of aging cosmetic products are applied on skin. Anti-oxidants, under eye gel, sun block cream, anti-irritants etc in the form of cream, gel or serum come in this group.

2. Wrinkle fillers- To correct wrinkles, depressed areas, scars, and loose folds on the skin wrinkle fillers are applied either by injection or by small incision. Botox (Botulinum toxin) is the most commonly used as filler.

3. Skin rejuvenation by noninvasive or less invasive method- Various ray-treatments, microdermabrasion, chemical peeling, self-done-microdermabrasion, radiofrequency with various combination treatments come in this category.

4. Invasive methods- When all above methods fail or when aging symptoms become acute one must undergo this process. Invasive methods are- the surgical removal of double chin, abdominal skin lift, liposuction, face-lift, facial implantation, skin lift etc. These are permanent and expensive methods.

You should know which type of treatment you need depending on the extent of aging. There are multiple anti-aging skin care products and hardly any one of them gives exactly the result that they advertise. It is better to consult a skin care expert if you really plan to treat your aged skin.
